Best of Durham - Pt. 8
Located in northern North Carolina, Durham is the fourth largest city in the state. It's a city of 500,000 residents and offers a wide range of activities for all ages. The city has a strong arts and music scene, and it's home to several top-rated universities. Durham is also a hub for technology and startups. It is one of the three municipalities that make up the Research Triangle in North Carolina. The research universities are renowned for their innovation, and there is a strong entrepreneurial spirit in the area.
Durham is the home of Duke University. Duke's campus features the Nasher Museum of Art, which is the largest art museum in the state, as well as neo-Gothic Duke Chapel. Duke's alumni are renowned for their contributions to the arts and sciences. Duke is one of the largest employers in Durham. Duke University's parent company, Duke Energy, also has a presence in Durham.
Duke University, along with other universities in the area, hosts a number of events, games, and plays throughout the year. The Carolina Hurricanes play in PNC Arena, and the Carolina Theatre screens independent and repertory films. Durham is also the home of the OUTsouth Queer Film Festival, which is the second largest LGBTQ+ film festival in the Southeast.
Durham's renowned food scene is also a highlight of the community. The Durham Kitchen, located in the city's historic Downtown Center, uses local ingredients for its menu. Plum Southern Kitchen and Bar is a modern family-run restaurant that offers Southern small plates. The restaurant's executive chef, Shane Ingram, leads a panoramic rooftop bar, The Roof. Durham has a rich history that stretches back to the earliest settlers. The area was settled by Scots, Irish, and English colonists who farmed land granted to George Carteret by King Charles I. In 1771, Loyalist militia cut Cornwallis Road through the Durham area. It was then used to quash a rebellion by local farmers. In 1775, Durham was the site of the Provincial Capital Congress, where William Johnston served. He was a farmer and shopkeeper, and he made munitions for the Revolutionary Army. He also helped underwrite Daniel Boone's explorations in the western United States.
A major turning point in Durham's development was the railroad. The Durham Station was built for locomotives between Raleigh and Hillsborough. Duke Power took over the local transit franchises in the area, and by the end of the 20th century, it had electrified all of the towns in central and western North Carolina. Duke Power was a family-run company, and the Duke family honored their father with a philanthropic foundation. Check out our website.
Aside from its rich history, Durham is a diverse and exciting community. It has a strong African American community, and has been home to many civil rights activists. Durham is also a center for Democratic progressives. For decades, Durham County voters have voted for a Democratic presidential candidate in every election. In recent years, however, the political alliances have changed. Durham's politics are now dominated by middle-class African American and white liberals. These alliances have shaped the city's politics since the early 1980s.
