Located in Orange County, NC, Blackwood is an affluent suburb of Chapel Hill. It is the county's third largest city by population and is only a few miles from Chapel Hill's bustling downtown. Its most impressive feature is its proximity to Duke University. The university, one of the most prestigious in the state, has an alumni base of over a quarter of a million alumni. Its other claim to fame is its close proximity to the Raleigh Durham airport. As a bonus, the city is also on the cusp of the Blue Ridge Mountains. It is an attractive place to live and work. Fortunately for visitors, there are more than a few upscale hotels and resorts in the area. Its newest entrant is The Village at Carrboro, a mixed-use development with more than 300 apartments and condominiums and an eclectic collection of shops and eateries. The town is also home to a number of prestigious institutions, including Duke University and UNC Chapel Hill, the state's flagship university. The aforementioned amenities make it an ideal home base for a family in search of both convenience and an idyllic setting.
The city is also home to a number of parks and greenspaces, including the oh so named Blackwood Farm Park. The park, which spans over 152 acres of land, features a corncrib, a smokehouse and a handful of open fields and outbuildings to boot. Among other attractions, the park features a well-kept golf course, a slew of hiking trails and a well-lit fishing pond. The park is also home to the aforementioned eminces, and has a well-deserved reputation as a family-friendly destination. As of the writing of this article, the park was a tad understaffed, but that's a matter of time and not a problem. Among other things, the park is also a proving ground for the state's nascent outdoor adventure club. A number of members have taken advantage of the park's numerous recreational activities, including kayaking, hiking and horseback riding. If you are looking to take the kids out on a family excursion, be sure to check out the park's calendar.
In conclusion, Blackwood has its flaws, but it's a city worth considering. Its affluent neighbors haven't stopped it from affording a few niceties, including an affluent downtown area and a well-preserved history.
