Museum of Life and Science
Located in Durham, North Carolina, the Museum of Life and Science offers a variety of unique experiences. The campus consists of 84 acres of exhibits and outdoor spaces, including a two-story science center, a butterfly conservatory, and outdoor animal exhibits. The museum also offers a range of hands-on exhibits and STEM field trip activities. The museum is located at 433 W Murray Ave, Durham, NC 27704.
The Museum of Life and Science is a nonprofit organization that offers a variety of educational experiences. They offer memberships and discounts to classes, after-hours events, and other activities. The Museum of Life and Science is an animal-centric museum that features an assortment of exhibits that promote natural science concepts. These exhibits make the museum an exciting place to visit.
The Magic Wings Butterfly House at the Museum of Life and Science is the largest on the East Coast. It features a 35-foot glass conservatory and hundreds of tropical butterflies. This facility has also been recognized for its commitment to hands-on exhibits.
The North Carolina Museum of Life and Science includes a nature trail and several outdoor animal exhibits. Visitors can see American black bears, red wolves, and radiated tortoises. These animals were rescued from unhealthy environments and are now part of the museum's conservation program. The outdoor exhibits are beautifully landscaped, allowing guests to view these animals in their natural habitat. This is a favorite of many of our staff at MCC.
The Museum of Life and Science also has a Lepidopterist who releases butterflies daily. This facility also offers a farmyard where guests can pet a wide variety of animals. The Animal Keepers also host a Farmyard Up-Close program every day at 4:30 p.m. Visitors can observe the animals at work and ask questions to the animal keepers.
The Museum of Life and Science offers a variety of outdoor exhibits, including the Hideaway Woods, which features tree houses with slides and walkways. Visitors can also enjoy a cool stream and a play zone for younger children. The Sprout Cafe is another dining option at the museum, offering delicious meals and snacks. Guests can also purchase a membership to the museum, which allows access to the museum an hour before the regular opening time. The museum is also a member of the Association of Zoo & Aquariums, which gives members access to other museums throughout the country.
The Museum of Life and Science is the home of one of the East Coast's largest aquariums. The Bayer Insectarium showcases rare and exotic insects from around the world. The museum also features an outdoor exhibit for rescued animals. In 2018, the Red Wolf Museum joined a group of conservation organizations in their efforts to save radiated tortoises.
The Museum of Life and Science is also home to seven ring-tailed lemurs. These lemurs are social animals that play and groom themselves. They are known for their black and white striped tails. They are part of the Ring-Tailed Species Survival Plan, which is aimed at protecting genetic diversity. Visitors can also learn about the lemur's natural habitat through the Lemur exhibit.
