It's not in your head. It's stuck in your body.
Some experiences stay stuck in your body long after they're over.
You know it happened in the past. But your mind and body keep reacting like it's still happening now. A sound, a smell, a situation—and suddenly you're back there. Heart racing. Chest tight. Overwhelmed by feelings that don't match the moment.
That's what unprocessed trauma does. It doesn't fade with time. It gets trapped.
EMDR therapy is one of the most effective treatments for helping your brain finally process what happened—so you can stop reliving it and start moving forward.
At Morrisville Counseling and Consulting, our EMDR therapists work with adults across Morrisville, Cary, Raleigh, Durham, and Apex who are ready to heal from trauma, PTSD, sexual assault, and other painful experiences that traditional talk therapy hasn't resolved.

What Is EMDR Therapy?
EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. It's a type of therapy specifically designed to help the brain process traumatic memories.
Here's the simple version: when something traumatic happens, your brain sometimes can't process it the way it normally would. The memory gets "stuck"—along with all the emotions, body sensations, and beliefs attached to it.
That's why trauma can feel so present even years later. Your brain hasn't filed it away as a past event. It's still live.
EMDR helps your brain do what it couldn't do at the time: process the memory fully so it loses its emotional charge.
During EMDR sessions, your therapist guides you through the memory while you follow a bilateral stimulus—usually eye movements, but sometimes taps or sounds. This activates both sides of your brain and helps it reprocess the stuck material.
Most people describe it as the memory becoming less intense. It doesn't disappear—but it stops hijacking your emotions and reactions.

How EMDR Therapy Works
EMDR follows a structured eight-phase approach. Here's what to expect:
Phase 1: History and Planning Your therapist learns about your history, your symptoms, and what you want to work on. Together you identify the memories and beliefs to target.
Phase 2: Preparation You learn coping skills to manage distress—both during sessions and between them. This ensures you feel stable enough to process difficult material.
Phases 3–6: Processing This is the core of EMDR. You focus on a traumatic memory while following bilateral stimulation (usually eye movements). Your therapist guides you as your brain reprocesses the memory and the distress decreases.
Phase 7: Closure Each session ends with stabilization. You'll leave feeling grounded, not raw.
Phase 8: Reevaluation At the start of the next session, your therapist checks in on progress and determines what to work on next.
Most people notice shifts within a few sessions. Some issues resolve quickly. Others take longer. Your therapist will work with you to find the right pace.

Common Questions About EMDR Therapy
Does EMDR really work?
Yes. EMDR is one of the most researched trauma treatments available. It's endorsed by the World Health Organization, the VA, and the American Psychological Association for treating PTSD. Learn more about common myths about EMDR, here.
Is EMDR safe?
EMDR is considered very safe, with fewer side effects than many other treatments. It's common to feel some intensity as disturbing memories are processed, but this is generally brief and your therapist will help you stay grounded throughout. Here are signs you're ready for EMDR therapy.
Is EMDR only for PTSD?
No. EMDR is effective for many issues rooted in difficult experiences—including anxiety, phobias, grief, childhood trauma, and sexual assault. It's particularly helpful for people who haven't found success with traditional talk therapy.
Do I need to talk in detail about my trauma? No. Unlike talk therapy, EMDR doesn't require you to describe your trauma in detail. The therapy focuses more on the emotions and physical sensations tied to the memory, which many clients find less overwhelming.
How is EMDR different from other therapies?
EMDR is more physiological than traditional talk therapy. It uses eye movements or other bilateral stimulation to help your brain reprocess trauma. There's no homework between sessions, and you don't have to narrate your experience in detail.
What does EMDR feel like? Most people say it's intense but manageable. You may feel emotional during processing, but afterward, many clients feel lighter—like the memory has lost its grip.
How long does EMDR take?
It depends on what you're working on. Sessions typically run 50–90 minutes weekly. Some people see significant progress in 6–12 sessions; complex trauma may take longer. Your therapist will help you assess progress along the way.
Can EMDR be done online?
Yes. Telehealth EMDR is effective and available for clients throughout North Carolina.
