Something's different with your child. Maybe it's the meltdowns that seem to come out of nowhere. The stomachaches before school.
The way they've started pulling back from friends or struggling with things that used to be easy.
You've tried talking to them, but they can't quite explain what's wrong. And honestly? Neither can you.
Kids don't always have the words for what they're feeling. But that doesn't mean they can't get help.
A child therapist gives your kid a safe space to work through big emotions—using play, art, and conversation that meets them where they are.
At Morrisville Counseling and Consulting, we provide therapy for children ages 6 to 12 at our office on Slater Road. We also offer telehealth for families across North Carolina.

Helping Kids Thrive: Our Child Therapists
The therapists at Morrisville Counseling and Consulting who work with children are trained specifically in child development and kid-friendly therapeutic approaches.
They know how to build trust with kids who are nervous or resistant. They know how to make therapy feel safe, even fun. And they know how to involve parents without breaking the child's sense of confidentiality.
Your child won't feel like they're in trouble. They'll feel like they have someone in their corner.

What We Help Kids Work Through
Children come to therapy for many reasons. Sometimes it's a specific event. Sometimes it's a pattern that's been building. Here's what we see most often:
Anxiety and worry.
Fear of separation, social anxiety, perfectionism, or general worry that makes everyday things harder.
Anger and emotional regulation.
Meltdowns, aggression, or difficulty calming down when upset.
School-related stress.
Academic pressure, social issues with peers, or trouble adjusting to a new school or grade.
Family changes.
Divorce, a new sibling, moving, or other transitions that shake up a child's sense of stability.
Grief and loss.
The death of a family member, friend, or pet. Kids grieve differently than adults and often need extra support to process it.
Trauma.
Experiences that overwhelm a child's ability to cope—whether a single event or ongoing stress.
Behavioral challenges.
Defiance, lying, or other behaviors that are causing problems at home or school.
What Child Therapy Looks Like (Ages 6–12)
Therapy for kids isn't the same as therapy for adults. Children process things differently, and they often don't have the vocabulary to describe what's going on inside.
That's why we use approaches designed for how kids actually think and communicate:
Play therapy.
Play is how children make sense of the world. Through toys, games, and creative activities, kids express feelings they can't put into words. The therapist observes, engages, and helps your child work through difficult emotions in a way that feels natural.
Art and expressive activities.
Drawing, storytelling, and other creative tools help children externalize their feelings and open up at their own pace.
Cognitive-behavioral techniques (CBT).
For older kids (ages 9–12), we introduce skills for identifying and managing anxious thoughts, calming their bodies, and handling difficult situations.
Parent involvement.
You're part of the process. Your child's therapist will check in with you regularly to share progress, answer questions, and give you tools to support your child at home.

Signs Your Child Might Benefit from Therapy
Every kid has hard days. But when the hard days become a pattern, it's worth paying attention.
Parents in Morrisville, Cary, and Apex call us when they notice things like:
Emotional changes. Frequent crying, anger outbursts, or mood swings that seem out of proportion. Worry that won't quit. Sadness that sticks around.
Behavior shifts. Acting out at home or school. Defiance that's new or getting worse. Trouble following rules they used to handle fine.
School struggles. Declining grades, avoiding school, trouble focusing, or complaints from teachers about behavior or participation.
Social withdrawal. Pulling away from friends. Not wanting to go to activities they used to enjoy. Spending more time alone.
Physical complaints. Headaches, stomachaches, or other symptoms without a medical cause—especially before school or stressful situations.
Sleep or appetite changes. Trouble falling asleep, nightmares, or changes in eating habits.
Regression. Going back to younger behaviors like bedwetting, clinginess, or tantrums.
You know your child. If something feels off, trust that instinct.

What to Expect at the First Appointment
The first session is about getting to know your child—and helping them feel comfortable.
Here's how it typically works:
-
Parent check-in. We'll start by talking with you (without your child present) to understand what's been going on, your concerns, and what you're hoping therapy will help with.
-
Meeting your child. Your child will meet their therapist in a low-pressure setting. Depending on their age and comfort level, this might involve games, drawing, or just conversation.
-
Next steps. After the first session, the therapist will share initial observations and talk with you about a plan for moving forward.
Most kids warm up quickly once they see that therapy isn't scary—and that their therapist is there to help, not judge.

Questions About Child Therapy
How do I know if my child needs therapy?
If your child is showing persistent changes in mood, behavior, sleep, appetite, or school performance—or if they've experienced something difficult like a loss, family change, or trauma—therapy can help. Trust your instincts. If something feels off, it's worth exploring.
What age do you work with?
We provide therapy for children ages 6 to 12 at our Morrisville office. For teenagers (ages 13–18), see our Teen Counseling page.
Will you tell me what my child says in therapy?
We involve parents in the process while respecting your child's need for a safe, confidential space. Your child's therapist will share general themes, progress, and concerns with you—but won't repeat everything your child says. This balance helps kids open up.
What if my child doesn't want to go?
It's normal for kids to be nervous or resistant at first. Our therapists are skilled at building rapport with hesitant children. Most kids warm up within a session or two once they see that therapy is a safe, supportive space—not punishment.
How long does child therapy take?
It depends on your child's needs. Some children feel better after 8–12 sessions. Others benefit from longer-term support. We'll check in regularly and adjust as your child progresses.
Do you offer play therapy?
Yes. Play therapy is one of the primary approaches we use with younger children (ages 6–9). It allows kids to express feelings and work through challenges using toys, games, and creative activities.
