Your teenager used to talk to you. Now they barely look up from their phone. The door stays closed. Grades are slipping. Something is off—and you don't know how to fix it.
You're not alone. Parents across Morrisville, Cary, and Apex call us every week with the same worry: "I feel like I'm losing my kid."
Here's what we've learned after years of teen counseling in Morrisville: teenagers shut down for reasons that make sense to them—even when it doesn't make sense to you. They're not broken. They're stuck. And with the right support, they open back up.
At Morrisville Counseling and Consulting, we work with teens ages 13 to 18 and their families. Our office is located off Slater Road near Park West Village, with easy access from Cary Parkway, I-40, and I-540. We also offer telehealth for families across North Carolina.

Signs Your Morrisville Teen Needs Counseling
Not every moody teenager needs therapy. Adolescence is hard. Some attitude is normal.
But parents in Morrisville and West Cary often call us when they notice patterns like these:
Mood changes that don't go away:
-
Weeks of sadness, not just a bad day
-
Anger that blows up over small things
-
Pulling away from friends and family
School problems:
-
Grades dropping fast
-
Refusing to go to school
-
Losing interest in activities they used to love
Physical signs:
-
Sleeping too much or not enough
-
Eating more or less than usual
-
Headaches or stomachaches with no medical cause
Risky behavior:
-
Lying more than usual
-
Sneaking out
-
Experimenting with alcohol or vaping
If you're checking multiple boxes, trust your gut. Parents usually know when something is wrong—even when they can't name it.

Teen Counseling for Anxiety, Depression, and School Stress
Every teenager is different. But certain patterns show up again and again in our Morrisville practice.
Anxiety:
Racing thoughts before tests. Fear of social situations. Panic attacks out of nowhere. Constant worry about college, friendships, or fitting in.
Depression:
Losing interest in things they used to love. Feeling numb or empty. Trouble getting out of bed. Dark thoughts they won't talk about.
School pressure:
The race to get into a good college starts earlier every year. Teens in Morrisville, Cary, and Apex feel it. AP classes, sports, SAT prep—it piles up. Some kids crack.
Family conflict:
Divorce. Remarriage. A new sibling. Moving to a new neighborhood. Family stress often shows up in teen behavior—even when they won't talk about it.
Identity struggles:
Figuring out who you are is hard enough without Instagram and TikTok.Many teens struggle with body image, self-worth, and feeling like they don't fit in.
Our teen therapists meet your child where they are. Not where you think they should be.

What Happens in Teen Therapy Sessions
A lot of parents ask: "My kid won't talk to me. Why would they talk to a therapist?"
Good question. Here's the truth: teens talk to therapists because we're not their parents.
No history. No fear of getting in trouble. Just a neutral person who listens without judging.
In a typical teen counseling session at our Morrisville office, your teenager might:
-
Talk through what's bothering them—school, friends, pressure, anxiety
-
Learn skills to handle big emotions like anger or panic
-
Work through past experiences that still affect them today
-
Practice how to communicate better at home
Sessions last about 50 minutes, usually once a week. Some teens come for a few months. Others stay longer. It depends on what they need.
We also offer family sessions when it helps. Sometimes the best way to support a teen is to help the whole family talk to each other.
Telehealth is available too. Some teens prefer it—they feel more comfortable in their own space.

How Our Teen Therapists in Morrisville Build Trust
Teens don't respond well to lectures. They've had enough of those.
Our approach is different. We listen first. We let them lead. We don't pretend to have all the answers.
We use methods backed by research:
-
CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy):
-
Helps teens change negative thought patterns
-
-
DBT (Dialectical Behavior Therapy):
-
Teaches emotional control and coping skills
-
-
Trauma-informed care:
-
For teens who've been through abuse, loss, or other hard experiences
-
We don't force teens to talk before they're ready. Trust comes first. The rest follows.

Advice for Parents of Struggling Teens
One of the hardest parts of teen counseling is feeling left out. You want to know what's being said. You want to fix it.
Here's the truth: you won't hear everything. Teens need privacy to feel safe. Without it, they won't open up.
But you're not on the sidelines.
Your teen's therapist will check in with you. We'll share how things are going in general terms. We'll give you strategies to use at home. And if there's ever a safety concern, we'll tell you right away.
In the meantime, here's what helps:
-
Ask questions—but not "why" questions. They put teens on defense.
-
Don't take the bait. Teens push buttons. Try not to react.
-
Keep showing up. Even when they push you away.
-
Be patient. Change takes time.
You're doing the hardest job there is.
Questions About Teen Counseling
What if my teenager refuses to go?
This happens a lot. Many teens resist at first. We can coach you on how to approach it. Sometimes just explaining that therapy isn't what they expect helps them give it a try.
Will I know what they talk about?
Your teen's therapist won't share session details—that's how trust gets built. But we'll check in with you about progress and let you know immediately if there's a safety concern.
How long does teen counseling take?
It depends. Some teens come for 8–12 sessions. Others stay longer. We check in regularly to make sure it's helping.
Do you prescribe medication?
No. We focus on therapy. If medication might help, we'll refer you to a psychiatrist or your teen's doctor.
Can parents be involved?
Yes—when it makes sense. Family sessions can help improve communication. Your level of involvement depends on what's best for your teen.
